ALL MATERIALS ARE MIRRORS (2024)

ALL MATERIALS ARE MIRRORS (2024) is a tangible sculpture made of clothing compiled of LGBTQ+ Hoosiers. Throughout the clothes, there are three poems screen-printed on white T-shirts reflecting on the Queer and Trans experience in Indiana in 2024: Small (Self), Medium (Midwest), Large (Land: USA).

When you’re shopping, you’re having the autonomy to express whoever you want to be and that is an imperative part dissected in the bravery of the Queer experience. I chose the clothing rack to display the poems and outfits because the audience must re-visit this exploration of expression, confidently making choices, and have a personal experience with the poetry and people that create the sculpture.

This is part of an ongoing series and model to be replicated in different cities. Part of Sylvia’s mission as a visual artist is to create visual, tangible, and poetic work archiving LGBTQ+ experiences.

This project funded by the Creative Risk Fund through the Herbert Simon Family Foundation. For 2024, Sylvia was funded $7,500 (USD) to traverse Indiana to interview LGBTQ+ Hoosiers, write poetry inspired by her interviews, and create physical sculptures using textiles and poetry to show how Queer and Transgender people are sewn into the fabric of the Midwest Americana
